We are visiting my sister in California. It has been such a wonderful trip so far. Our first day we drove to Amarillo, TX. We stayed at the Big Texan Motel which was an absolute blast and a great way to start our trip.
The rooms kind of resembled stalls in the decor with a small refrigerator to store car snacks in. It even had a freezer which, sadly, we forgot to look inside when we left and our ice packs are still  vacationing there. The Big Texan is the home of the free "if you can eat it all" 72 oz steak. We were hoping someone would attempt this while we were there but sadly they did not. I ordered a 12 oz ribeye and Mark had an 18 oz sirloin.
We both agreed that, by far, these were some of the best (if not THE best) steaks we had ever eaten. The bread was ok by steakhouse standards. My sweet potato was a sticky mess and I would have preferred it served without the aluminum foil. I mean really...it was all of 20 feet from the grill area to the table. The salad was a salad, nothing special but the housemade dressings were excellent. They have an in house brewery which, when looking around, seemed to be the beverages of choice. The restaurant itself is decorated in true texas fashion with animal heads and rhinestone everything. It's great fun to wander around and check out all the strange, fun nooks and crannies. They even had a Zoltar Fortune Telling Machine. I think perhaps the most interesting, if not disconcerting thing that happened to us was the
wandering minstrel type singers crooning everything from Johnny Cash to Willie Nelson. They were fun, older gentlemen who kept us laughing. One of the men had oxygen on which he kept adjusting while he played a mean fiddle. After dinner we "moseyed" back to our room where we found, to our delight, that the beds were comfortable, with very warm comfy bedding. Even silly dog was satisfied, taking the spare bed as her personal space for the night, blending in with the black and white holstein bedspread!

The hotel was multi colored for the "regular people" and plain barn wood for the horse/dog people. I was actually glad to be "out back" because it was quiet without the noise of cars coming and going to the restaurant till late. Even the cowboys who were constantly pulling in and unloading horses just wanted to get to bed with as little fuss as possible. It was one of the quietest places we have stayed.
The minions have been with us on the trip as well, with many pictures to come of them in famous places. The strangest thing in the room was the fly swatter which apparently is a necessity due to our proximity to the horse hotel! Truly I would never have stayed in a hotel like this but I am glad that Mark decided we should give it a try. Everything was clean, comfortable with the entire staff bending over backwards to make their guests feel comfortable. Even the hot coffee the next morning at 4:30 am was excellent, not the cheap stuff usually put out in motel lobbies.
